Family Reunions – Five Fantastic Indoor Games

Family reunions are so much fun! Uncles, aunts, grandparents, babies, nieces, nephews, young and old, meeting together as an extended family. But what do you do if the weather is so dreadful that you can not enjoy an outdoor reunion? Try these five fantastic indoor games for family reunions.

Table Story is one of our favourite indoor parlour games. Players sit in a circle. One player begins the story with two or three sentences, ending in such a way that the following player can keep the story going. For example, "George and Nathan had set up their camp site and were preparing the evening meal. They were both a little tired from the day's hike. George checked the boiling billy and noticed something different about the water." The following player can continue the story about hiking and camping, or she could alter it to include a flying saucer or a jet plane or anything else, as long as the story continues to make sense. The story can finish after two or three rounds.

If you want a family reunion game that is more active, try Dumb Crambo. Players divide into two teams. Team One leaves the room while Team Two chooses a familiar word that can be acted out. The chosen word should have at least three other similar sounding words that can also be mimed. If you chose "drive", there is also "dive", "five" and "hive". Two One returns and Team Two tells them one of the similar words ( "hive"). Team Two then tries to guess the correct word by miming words like "hive". No one is allowed to speak at all, except Team Two says "Boo, Hiss!" if they mime a wrong word, and "Hooray!" when they finally mime the right word. Teams swap places each round.

Taps is an entertaining game for players seated around a table. Everyone places their left hand on the table in front of the person on their left and their right hand in front of the person on their right, so that each player has one hand from each neighbour in front of them. At the beginning of the game one player taps their left hand on the table without lifting their wrist. The player whose hand is immediately to the left of that hand (the second person to their left) then taps their hand. This continues in the same way around the table. Practise for a few minutes before you play the proper game. Any player who does not tap their hand within one second, or who moves the wrong hand, or who taps their hand out of turn must remove their hand from the circle; if both hands are removed, you're out of the game. As if this was not hard enough already, any player can double tap to reverse the direction of the game.

Another favourite game for our family is Fractionary. Each person has a sheet of paper and a pen / pencil. One player chooses an obscure word from a dictionary (such as "diptych", a painting on two boards that can close like a book) without telling the other players the meaning. She writes the word and definition on her paper while the other players write the word and a made-up definition to suit the word. The first player collects all the papers and reads them anonymously. Players vote for the definition they believe is the right one. Anyone who guesses the definition correctly receives two points, while a player receives one point any time someone chose their definition. A new player chooses a word for each round.

Chinese Whispers (also known as Rumours or Broken Telephone) is another fantastic team game. Two teams are lined up so they can not hear each other. An organiser whispers a phrase (such as "Princess Alena sat amongst the broken wreaths and cried stridently") to the first player in each team. The phrase must then be whispered from player to player down the line WITHOUT REPEATING IT. The final player on each team whispers their version of the phrase to the organiser. When both players have told their phrase, the organiser reads them both out, along with the original phrase. It is so much fun to hear how much it changed as it went down the teams.

Summerizing Your Snow Blower

It's time to put your snow blower away for the season. Chances are you've already stuck it in the corner of your garage or shed and happily forgotten about it but, trust me, drag it outside and take a little time to prep it for proper storage.

Besides, it's a lot easier to work on it in the natural sunlight of your driveway or back yard than in the thick of a major Winter snow storm. It will not take long at all if you have been taking good care of it. First of all, buy yourself a spark plug, some Winter weight oil such as 5W 20 or 5W30, the same year round oil that most cars use these days. Also, buy some fuel preservative such as Sta-Bi, Store Safe or any other comparable brand.

First off, change the spark plug even though it looks good. It's worth the few bucks for the added benefit of a hot spark on a cold day. It would not hurt to snug down the head bolts in case any of them have become loose. If you do not have a torque wrench, just snug them down while choking up on the wrench handle so as not to over-due it. Use a criss-cross pattern for even distribution.

Chances are the bolts will not even move but it's worth the extra 2 minutes. Top off the gas tank with fresh fuel, leaving enough room for the gas preservative recommendations and start the snow blower up and let it run for 10 minutes or so in order for the preservative to make it's way into the carburetor and it's small orifices and cavities where un-attended fuel turns to varnish and creates a no-start situation come the first snow fall.

Note: There is another school of thought that says to drain the fuel tank and run the carburetor completely out of fuel for storage. In my opinion, flip a coin and do whichever you want. They both prevent the problem of stale fuel plugging up your carburetor.

Next, take advantage of the warm engine to drain the hot engine oil while the nasty sediments are properly suspended and drain out with the old oil instead of staying behind in the bottom of the oil pan. Dispose of the oil properly at your local auto repair shop.

If you're up to it, replace any worn or stretched drive belts and rubber faced drive disc if your snow blower has one. Otherwise, save that for your local servicing dealer. Lubricate all external pivot points on the levers, cables, linkage, etc. with some WD-40, white lithium grease or an appropriate substitute. All those small pivot holes dry out and become elongated over time if they are never lubricated.

Energy drinks are huge in the United States and other parts of the world. As our lives get busier, the first thing we always seem to sacrifice is our sleep. Designed to proved both a shot of energy and act as a source of nutrients, these drinks allow us to make it through the day without passing out before lunch time. In recent years so many people have adapted their lifestyle around these drinks that stories have started to surface of the possible negative attributes of these drinks. Alleged death from consuming these drinks in clubs and during other activities have raised the red flag to legislatures worried about energy drink health concerns. What about these drinks is cause for alarm, and how much of these claims are accurate?

A Short History

The modern day energy drink evolved from a drink that was first marketed in Japan during the 1960's. This drink, called Lipovitan-D (still available in Japan), contained a mix of B vitamins and taurine. Taurine, an amino acid, is a metabolic agent that is used to boost energy and concentration. The drink was originally created as a medical tonic for people suffering from chronic fatigue, but it grew in popularity as it was quickly adopted by the clubbing scene in Tokyo.

From Japan the energy drink was taken up by several Asian countries as it made its way towards Europe and the United States. The first commercially sold drink in the US was Red Bull. Taking the basic drink formula used in Japan, the creator of Red Bull added caffeine and sugar to the mix, a staple of energy drinks to this day. The energy drink market exploded once Red Bull hit the scene, and several other companies threw their hat in the ring to vie for the consumer's dollar.

Energy Drink Health Concerns

i. The Ingredients

If you were to individually look at each ingredient common to most energy drinks, you would not find anything too harmful.

Taurine is an amino acid commonly found in meat and fish proteins. It stabilizes cell membranes in the brain and heart, and is essential in newborns since they can not make it. Some studies even say that taurine can help improve athletic performance. Up to 3,000 milligrams a day of supplemental taurine is considered safe.

B-vitamins help your body make energy from the food you eat. They are also critical nutrients for improving mood, memory, and other brain related functions. These vitamins can be found in the proteins of fish, poultry, mean, eggs, and dairy products. Leafy green vegetables also contain B vitamins.

Caffeine is no stranger to most people as it is the feature ingredient in coffee. Coffee is consumed by millions of people with no ill effects, and most people require the caffeine to make it to work every morning. As most people know, caffeine is a stimulant which causes your heart rate to increase, your pupils to dilate, and your muscles to tighten up. Small doses of this substance can actually by quite beneficial to you by helping your metabolism or curbing chronic fatigue.

Sugar is probably the most harmful substance ( at least isolated individually) found in these drinks. Sugar is the slow, silent killer as it is the main culprit in obesity and diabetes. Those sugary treats that you use to reward yourself or your child should be the first thing cut for those looking to improve their health lifestyles.

II. The Mix

If you're drinking one energy drink every once and a while, then you should be fine. Taking Red Bull, the leading drink, as an example, it contains 1000 mg of taurine and 80 mg of caffeine. The consensus is that about 3000 mg of taurine and 200 to 300 mg of caffeine a day is not harmful. This of course does not apply to those who may suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, or other ailments. The problem, however, is that not enough research has been done on the combination of all of these ingredients, such as the interaction between taurine and caffeine. Also, while the adverse effects of too much caffeine intake is well documented, such is not the case for taurine.

Energy drink health concerns are present in countries such as Germany, Australia, and New Zealand that have reported liver damage, kidney failure, respiratory disorders, agitation, confusion, seizures, psychotic conditions, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, rhabdomyolysis, tachycardia, cardiac dysrhythmias, hypertension, myocardial infraction, heart failure, and death from excess consumption.

One of the chief energy drink health concerns is that many teens and adolescents are drinking them like they used to drink their juice boxes in elementary school. A culture is developing in which these drinks are consumed not for their intended purpose (to provide energy!). One report estimates that 46% of the caffeine overdoses in the US reported in 2007 occurred in people younger than 19 years.

Many energy drink companies market their drink toward athletes under the guise of performance enhancing. Many athletes have used caffeine to give them that extra energy before a match long before energy drinks have hit the market. Many athletes do not realize the entire extent of the stimulant, however. Caffeine acts a diuretic that can actually cause dehydration if consumed in large quantities. For this reason, athletes should avoid drinking energy drinks after competition as it will not replenish all of their lost nutrients and may just exacerbate things for them.

III. The Alcohol Factor

One of the more popular drinks for the clubbing scene is mixing energy drinks with alcohol. This combination seems to allow your body to get high without that nasty feeling of sleepiness. If you're a frequent club goer who consumes this drink, you should probably stop. The drink Four Loko, one part energy drink another part alcoholic, was recently banned in many states because of the energy drink health concerns it posed.

Many people believe that the depressant effects of alcohol can dampen the stimulating effects of energy drinks or vice versa. This is not true, however, and the stimulating effects of the energy drink may have you feeling less intoxicated than you actually are at the time. The fatigue you feel from drinking too much alcohol is your bodies way of saying, "Hey time to slow down." If you continue drinking (since you do not feel that fatigue) you only magnify the effect of the alcohol on your body as well as consume a potentially dangerous amount of caffeine (if you continue to drink the energy drink mix). This probably accounts for many of the club / energy drink related deaths.

Every persons' body is different, and no one should know your body better than yourself. About Carbon Dioxide Emissions and Carbon Credits

Whenever you use a motor on a yacht, Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is emitted into the atmosphere. Carbon Dioxide has been scientifically linked to Global Climate Change and Warming. With the worldwide concern about Carbon Emissions, it's important to understand how the activity of pleasure boating and yachting impacts global warming and what can be done about it.

Measuring Carbon Emissions

Carbon emissions are directly proportional to the amount of fuel burned by a yacht's motor. In general, burning a gallon of gasoline produces 19.564 pounds of carbon dioxide. You might be surprised that a gallon of gasoline that weighs 6.3 pounds produces such an enormous amount of CO2 – the reason being that the process of burning combines the gasoline with many times its weight in Oxygen.

Knowing this, we can easily and accurately predict or measure carbon emissions from boats and yachts. Virtually all boat and engine manufacturers provide information on the amount of fuel the boats burn per hour. That number, multiplied by the number of hours you cruise, will predict your carbon emissions. Alternatively, at the end of a trip, you can just add up the number of gallons or liters of fuel burned and do the same calculation for an exact figure.

Offsetting CO2 Emissions

There are a variety of organizations that allow you to buy "carbon credits" to offset the emissions you create while chartering. The United Nations works with many charities and NPOs to certify projects that will reduce carbon emissions (more about this below).

To get an idea of ​​what this might all cost, here's a simple example. Consuming 100 liters of fuel will produce 516 pounds of CO2 emissions, which will cost approximately £ 1.76 / EUR2.51 or $ 3.52 to purchase carbon offsets. Similarly 50 gallons of fuel burned will create 978 pounds of emissions, costing £ 3.33 or EUR4.75 or $ 6.66. A small cost to do your part to reduce Climate Change!

What are the Credits used for?

When you purchase a carbon credit you are generally investing in a project that will reduce carbon emissions. Beyond using wind as your sole propulsion, certain engines pollute less than others. 4 stroke engines, because the gasoline does not need to be mixed with oil, produce much lower emissions than 2 stroke engines. Fuel injected engines produce fewer emissions than carburetors. And wind assisted yachts, that run on both sail and motor, emit less than pure motor boats.

There is a new class of sailboat emerging that act similar to hybrid cars to reduce emissions. These boats use electric motors instead of diesel or gasoline, run by powerful batteries. These batteries can be regenerated by the spinning propellers while the boat is moving under sail, similar to a hybrid car. So they effectively are "Green" boats that produce almost no carbon emissions at all! Some are even efficient enough to offer air-conditioning, so you can have comfort with no negative environmental impact. The leading production boat is the Lagoon 420 Hybrid.

But these are just first steps – the majority of boats and yachts still emit large quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere. Age of Conan Guide – Level 80 Dark Templar PVP Build and Review

The level 80 PVP spec'ed DT

General comments on leveling:

While I made this guide, The Dark Templar (DT) seemed a little "gimped" from levels 1-25, able to handle his own, but not much more. From level 25 to 45 you will notice that the Dark Templar (DT) starts to come into his own strength, in this area you should be able to easily handle 3-4 mobs your level or 2-3 mobs a level above you. (This is with minimal downtime) From 45 to 65 the DT really becomes strong; anything your own level becomes a waste of time. Above 65 mobs even 3-4 levels above you are fair hunting game as long as you do not pull too many. You will find that more then other classes the DT becomes very dependent on properly placed feat points, even more then actual gear. The DT also seems to be a "late bloomer", not really coming into his own strength until 65+.

Skill points:

Bandaging and Fast Healing I have at 500. This seems to work fine with getting HP up between fights.

Recovery and fast Recovery I also have at 500. Stamina is the primary problem with DT's when leveling solo. You might even consider taking 100 points from bandaging and 100 points from Fast Recovery and putting them into Recovery and Fast recovery.

I have 200 in Endurance and 200 into Run Speed. These were both used until I bought a mount. For end game PvP, you may wish to put 400-500 into run speed. (You DO NOT use sprint in end game PvP, unless you are happy with popping stam pots.)

Climbing has 450 only because of a climb point in Aztel's Approach. (There is a shortcut there that you need to climb in order to use it)

Hiding has zero as this skill is not needed at all, in end game PvP you want others to see you, in order to come after you instead of the healers and nukers.

Perception has zero as I simply did not have enough points to place here. If you are going to use perception you will need to have this capped at 80 to be used effectively, and with a DT you can not afford to do this.

Taunt has zero as this is not a PvE build.

I do have 152 points left over, however I am saving these in case there is a climb point in a raid / group dungeon that has a 600 point requirement. If this turns out not to be a concern, it will go into run speed.

General:

I did have some reservations about putting any points at all in this tree. As such I only put 5 in recovery, since the Regen is half decent for the 5 points. The 2 points in improved frenzy stance are "left overs" that I did not see a better place for. The rest of the tree seems mostly for defense with the exception of Sustained Rage, which I did not have enough points to get. Remember this is a PvP build, NOT a PvE or raid build. In PvP you are not a prime target, healers and nukers are, and as such you can sometimes afford to be in frenzy stance to take down the enemy healers and nukers.

Desecration:

  • Devouring Touch 5 points: This beginning tree skill adds to your lifetap.
  • Covenant of Arms 5 points: This, IMO, is the best Covenant to run for DPS.
  • Vigor Leech 5 points: This is not an optional skill, the bane of a DT is stamina, and this stamina leech is a must have for PvE and PvP. This also leads to Ether Leech.
  • Talisman Mastery 0 points: I have not found a single decent talisman, and losing the shield does not seem to be intelligent.
  • Curse of Gwahlur 5 points: Decent skill that gives you health, causes damage, and seems to proc decently.
  • Ether Leech 1 point: Only 1 point here is awesome for a mana leech. (Note I do have Soul Barrier)
  • Corrupt Weapon: 2 points: A little disappointed here as it does not do much damage and it does not proc much, however I was forced to place 2 points to get the later Soul Barrier)
  • Improved Dread Fury 0 points: I can not even cast a basic buff of this as I get an error that a more powerful spell is currently in effect. (Covenant of Arms) So there was no need to waste points here, I use Aura of Infusion which is awesome for survivability.
  • Approach of Death 1 point: Only 1 point needed here, I do notice it once in a while, not a huge benefit though.
  • Improved Martyrdom 0 points: I am not a healer, although this does do a good boost to health, I did not wish to spend the points in this.
  • Improved Soul Covenants: 1 point: Awesome skill for only 1 point, it is supposed to raise the proc% of the covenant itself.
  • Soul Barrier 1 point: This is a controversial skill, when you cast this (Lasts 20 seconds) damage is applied to your mana pool before your actual health pool. If you do have time to cast it, it is an awesome spell. The only bad thing is the cast time, if you get jumped you do not have time to use it, however if your group is initializing the PvP, this is a very nasty bonus. Note that I did take the two stuns in the other tree, using one of them does give me time to cast it in solo PvP, and popping a mana pot works wonders while under its effects.

Depravity:

  • Blighted Touch 5 points: Awesome feat adds DPS and procs decently.
  • Blighted Soul 5 points: Basically makes Blighted touch an AOE; however the other skill in the tree is useless.
  • Crystallized Ether 0 points: Total waste, the only time you use mana is to buff, even if you have Soul Barrier, the shield will drop faster then this skill will replenish it, use a mana pot instead.
  • Dark Hand 5 points: Basic DPS add to your melee weps.
  • Devouring Blood Frenzy 3 points: Since I do often hit frenzy prepping for PvP this seemed to be a decent investment of 3 points. I have not noticed a significant difference so I may investigate this more in the future. It is supposed to give you some health while in frenzy stance.
  • Consuming Bulwark 0 points: I do not do defensive stance in PvP so this is a waste.
  • Pact of Malacodor 0 points: Since I already frenzy I did not want to take a large health hit to cause more damage.
  • Devourer's Might 5 points: DPS boost to an already powerful combo, I had no problem spending the 5 points here.
  • Dark Burden 0 points: I originally had this feat, however you had to be very close and I simply did not seem to have time to use it in PvP. As a tank class I am chasing healers and casters, I can stun them. Even if I am stuck chasing them, what good is a healer / nuker to the enemy team if they are constantly running?
  • Dissipate Ether 3 points: Needed this to cause double damage with incinerate ether. (Mana and HP)
  • Incinerate Ether 1 point: 1 point to double damage? Heck yeah.
  • Vile Soul 0 points: I have quite a few reservations about Sadism with a DT, the PBAOE is only double digit damage when it procs, almost useless in the fast pace PvP battles.
  • Sadistic Glee 0 points: Another Sadism feat .
  • Dread Lord 1 point: For 1 point you can not complain about lowering cooldown on combos, even if it is not a massive reduction.
  • Reaper of Malacodor 0 points: Need Pact of Malacodor for this.
  • Mind Wrack 1 point: 1 Point for a stun ability, awesome.
  • Ether Reap 0 points: Will not waste 5 points for the tiny mana Regen when I use Mystical Bane.
  • Hexer's Might 5 points: Another feat that adds DPS to a powerful combo.
  • Gore Fiend 0 points: Sadism Feat
  • Masochism 0 points: Sadism Feat
  • Touch of Death 5 points: Awesome skill for one shotting (Combo) casters
  • Air of Death 0 points: Decent skill however you must use Touch of death to trigger it. TOD has too long of a cooldown to justify this feat.
  • Sadistic Vengeance 0 points: Sadism Feat.
  • Mind Shatter 1 point: 1 Point for a more powerful stun, easy point placement here. Note the two stuns are on different cooldown timers.
  • Unholy Strength 5 points: Raises DPS of ALL combos.
  • Drain Strength 0 points: Wanted to place one here, but since I hunt healers and caster strength is meaningless to them.
  • Ravenous Eater 0 points: Did not have the preq for this.
  • Dread Shadow 1 point: This was the largest disappointment. Yes the skill works, however the pet spawns for a very short time 5 – 10 seconds. This should have been a 3 point feat at 10 seconds per point. Only 1 point, but almost useless.

Clamming In Weekapaug – Treasures Beneath The Ocean Floor

Digging for ocean clams is one of the simplest, most rewarding, unique and satisfying pleasures the great Atlantic has to offer. I have been clamming in Weekapaug, Rhode Island's Winnapaug Pond for 50 years and it never gets old.

The Winnapaug salt pond is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the Weekapaug Breachway. Every six hours the breachway brings in a tide, filling the pond to the brim, or brings a tide out, leaving the pond shallow with exposed mud flats. It is at this point – low tide – that the clammers come out. The Winnapaug Pond features several small tributaries or inlets. Most are crystal clear, shallow inlets perhaps 20 feet wide and at best knee deep. Others are a bit wider and a bit deeper up to one's chest. What these inlets – shallow or deep – have in common is that there are clams at the bottom!

Before we begin our excursion, some legal housekeeping is in order. You'll need a Rhode Island Shellfish License which can be obtained at city hall and several other locations for a nominal fee. When you are issued your license, you will be given a steel ring approximately two inches in diameter. More later on how this ring will be your most important piece of equipment.

The only other equipment you will need is a clam rake which looks very much like your everyday 5-pronged garden rake with 6-inch teeth. Only instead of digging up soil in your garden, you'll be scrapping mud with the implement. Once you're in the water, you begin running the rake over the sandy bottom until you hear and feel what seems to be a rock. Carefully bury the rakehead behind this solid object and pull up everything – the object and all the surrounding mud! You then dip the mass into the water several times, each time more mud gets peeled away until eventually, the 'object' appears. Sometimes it actually will be a rock, resulting in a moment of disappointment. Other times it will be a shell – an old one – from a clam who has long since left this world. But sometimes the rake contains a beautiful, shining, gray, live clam! And for as mundane as this may sound, you can not contain your excitement! However, before you get too excited, grab that steel ring we talked about. If the clam you caught fits through the ring, the creature must be returned to the ocean as too small. Do not take this lightly. Wardens from the Department of Environmental Management frequently check clamming areas and they can check your catch if they so choose. You do not want to know what can happen if one of your clams fits through their ring.

Most clammers are in search of the smaller 'steamers' which go well with a cup of melted butter. Others go after the larger quahogs to be put into a clam chowder. The clams I catch do not meet such fates. I hold each clam I catch in my hand, I study it, marvel at its coloration, enjoy its coolness to the touch and then I return it to where it belongs – the soft, sandy bottom of the ocean. My reasoning is that these clams made their journey from the ocean, fought their way up the breachway and made it to the calm of the salt pond. How cruel it would be to reward the joy they brought to me by introducing them to a bottle of cocktail sauce.
