When you buy a new snowboard, it will probably come pre-waxed. But, as you might expect, the wax used will not be of very high quality. And, from the standpoint of the company, why should it be. The less money out of their pocket for wax, the greater their profit margin. For you, however, it probably means that you will need to have your board waxed sooner rather than later if you want to get the most pleasant experience possible from your snowboard.

Many snowboarders never wax their boards thinking that it is not necessary. And for the casual snowboarder, that is probably true. But, in reality, waxing your snowboard will not only give you a faster run down the slopes, it will glide better and give you more control as well. You will have much more fun riding down the slopes if you do not have to put all of your effort into controlling the board. In addition, waxing your snowboard also improves its durability by helping to preserve the base. In short, keep your board waxed and it will last longer.

You have two choices when it comes to waxing your board. If there is a ski or snowboard shop nearby, you can have them wax your board. Also, those who live in apartments and simply do not have room, will probably need to have a shop wax their boards. The second choice is for you to learn to wax your board yourself. It is not that hard once you do it a few times.

Once you get the hang of it, waxing your board should not take very long. The first few times that you do it, be prepared to spend maybe thirty minutes to an hour – because you will not have a real feel to what you are doing. By the third or fourth time, however, you will most likely find yourself completing the entire job in twenty five minutes or less.

If you are only a casual snowboarder, you will probably need to wax your snowboard once or twice a season. If, however, you are snowboarding every weekend, waxing it once a month is a good idea.

Before beginning, you want to clean the base of your snowboard. Take a brass wire brush and begin brush from top to bottom. The purpose is to get much of the old wax out. Then use a rag to wipe off the debris from the board. Wearing gloves is a good idea. The edges of a snowboard are sharp. Gloves can prevent you from cutting your hands on the snowboard edges. After this, simply follow the instructions on your waxing kit and you are all set.

What is a Snowboard Stomp Pad and How is It Used

If you've ever thought about trying snowboarding, chances are you have heard of a snow board stomp pad. But how much to do you actually know about the pad and why it is an essential part of the equipment? Here's a few basic facts about a stomp pad and how it is used.

When getting off a chairlift and onto a snowboard, only one foot is actually in the binding. Your other foot has to rest on the snowboard itself until you can come to a complete stop and strap it into the binding. Sometimes you will need to make a turn as you leave the chairlift. This is where the stomp pad comes into play. The pad helps prevent your free foot from sliding all along the surface of the snowboard while you are making the turn.

Utilized to help you get traction on the surface of your snowboard, the stomp pad is adhered to the board with an adhesive. The topside of the pad will also be somewhat sticky, allowing your free foot a place to step and not slip around. Ideally, the pad will be placed toward the rear binding so that you can step directly onto the pad and ease your foot into the proper position to bind it to the board.

In addition to helping you dismount gracefully from a chairlift without ending up on the ground, the stomp pad also is useful for helping to remove any accumulation of snow that may have built up on your snowboard boots. By using the pad to scrape any snow or ice fragments before you strap in the foot, you make sure there is nothing that will interfere with your ability to control the direction of the board.

Typically, snowboards come with a stomp pad. If your board does not have one, it is a good idea to purchase one and adhere it to the board yourself. As the pads do need to be changed from time to time, the pads are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace, so go ahead and purchase several.

When affixing the stomp pad to your snowboard, make sure to not simply stick it in place and consider it done. Press down on the pad for a few seconds, making sure the pad does adhere to the board with no wrinkles or puffs in the pad. Do not remove the paper protector from the top of the pad until you are sure the bottom is firmly holding to your board.

It is a good idea to make a few trial runs with using the stomp pad before you get on a chairlift. Make sure you have a good feel for where your foot should be and get used to the way the pad provides the traction for your boot. Ideally, you should be so comfortable with this process that you do not have to watch what you are doing. Those extra seconds it takes to eyeball maneuvering your foot into place and securing the bindings can cost you valuable time during a competition.

Rollerblades are the modern version of the traditional roller skates which had four wheels to ensure a good body balance of the wearer. They were designed to more closely imitate the dynamics of the traditional single-blade ice skates. These were extremely popular in the early 1990s, and they have remained a popular footwear choice for sports-minded people who participate in the x-games and other extreme sports. Choosing the Right Tractor Tire Chains

Tractor tire chains come in many of the same models, styles, and designs as other tire chains. Depending on the size and brand of the tractor and tractor wheel, a variety of tire chains can be found.

Like most other types of tire chains, there are many different options available in tractor tire chains. The most popular choice, and the most widely recommended, is two-link spacing with an optional V-Bar. Two link spacing means that there is a cross chain every second side chain link. Basically, it has twice as many cross chains as the four-link spacing, which only has a cross chain every fourth side chain link. The extra chains provide for a more steady, smooth ride and more steering control. The optional V-Bar chains are extremely helpful on ice, hills, and other hard-packed conditions. While V-Bar chains are available in both two- and four-link spacing, they should not be used on pavement since they can damage the surface of the road.

Kubota Tractor tire chains are available in the basic two- and four-link chains. Kubota recommends using tire chains and wheel weights in icy conditions. Even when using tire chains, drivers should still drive at a speed slow enough to maintain complete control of the tractor at all times.

Crutching Chest Pain – What They Do not Tell You About Using Crutches

My winter of skiing mid-week with my Seniors ski pass came to a halt when I made a careless move at the top of the highest run. I went down hard on my hip on the frozen surface at the top of the Mt. Lincoln at Sugar Bowl, my favorite ski resort near Lake Tahoe, CA. Sliding downhill headfirst, I grabbed my right ski to flop myself over to get my skis downhill. I gently experimented with what would move and what would not. I asked my ski buddy, Harold, to get the ski patrol and tell them I need help.

The ski patrol arrived and checked me out – "what day is it, what's your name, did you hit your head, where do you hurt", and so on. I told them I could not move, and that my right hip and leg hurt.

What skill and courage those guys have! My location was quite steep, and there was not enough loose snow to plant a pole, much less get a foothold to load me into the sled litter. But they did it, and I kept my leg and hip in place. They strapped me in, covered me up, and away we went. My ski buddy later told me he could not keep up with us. What a ride that was!

Shivering and shaking, I was admitted into the resort clinic and onto a bed. Because it was mid-week, and they did not have a doctor present, they could not take an x-ray to define my injury. I could not put weight on the leg, and I did not want to move it. They loaded me up in my SUV, and Harold drove me down to Truckee to the hospital.

I was admitted through Emergency. More questions. "No, I do not have any insurance." I hoped for a strained muscle, and low cost. The x-ray was inconclusive, so they did a CT scan and confirmed that I had fractured the neck of my right femur – the place where the leg bone joins the pelvic bone. The doctor told me there is no alternative; I must have it repaired immediately. This is the point where I broke down and hid my face in my hands.

"Is there any alternative, Doctor ?," I asked, just in case.

"No. You need surgery tonight," he replied.

About six hours after the fall I was prepped for surgery. I was told it would take about twenty minutes, and could choose to be awake with a spinal block, or have general anesthesia. I woke up and they were done, cleaning up, sending me out of OR to a room for the night. I was happy to have it finished.

Post-op patients receive the best nursing care. In this case it meant lots of attention from a young, handsome male nurse, lots of company from staff. As many blankets as I wanted. More pain meds. Super! Then the day nurse came on. That was a different story. It was time to get off my duff and start walking. The occupational therapist came, the physical therapist came. Time to get out of bed.

The pain meds made me nauseated when I got up. They brought crutches and made sure they were the right height. The occupational therapist helped me hobble over to the toilet, so I thought I was doing just fine. She tried to get me to take a shower, but I was not interested. I just wanted to lay down and sleep again. I did not realize these were little "life skills" tests that one needs to accomplish to get a good report on the medical chart leading to discharge.

The physical therapy technician worked with me to teach me the proper use of the crutches. Do not hang by your armpits on the top of the crutch, hold yourself up with your hands. I had two sessions assigned that day, and if I did not pass the stair test, I would have to stay another night. That idea sent dollar signs zinging through my brain with imagery of even bigger hospital bills. Conscious of the fact that I am uninsured, I had to get out of there!

Through the haze of medication I had a thought. The meds are making me sick, change the pain med, so I can stand up and walk on the crutches, up and down the stairs, and get out of Dodge! That worked well enough and in time for my second physical therapy session. Hobbling down the hall to the therapy staircase, still feeling ill, I passed the stair exercise test and called my friend to take me home.

Thanks to my ski buddy for being my 24/7 caregiver following surgery. If not for his patience and generosity, I would have been at home, in the snow, alone, and unable to drive. My sister also came a week later to stay several days. If not for those two, I would have been up the proverbial creek.

About ten days after surgery, feeling pretty good and crutching well, my sister and I went out for a hamburger. I started feeling a bit of pain on the left side of my ribs, under my left arm. By the time we got home I was feeling in need of a cold pack or hot pack, so tried the cold first. That did not relieve the pain, which was now affecting my breathing. I tried a hot pack and immediately felt an increase in the pain and difficulty in breathing. The pain that it caused was huge. I do not think the fracture caused as much pain as this. Breathing shallow to keep from causing more pain, I hobbled off to bed to lay down and find a position that I could tolerate. I thought I had a broken rib or my lung had collapsed! I've never experienced those conditions, but I thought something like that must be the cause. I was relieved to know it would pass as Peggi recalled her experience with the same type of pain two years earlier for a broken leg.

"I remember getting crutches after I broke my leg. Within a week I went to get up from the couch and I could not take a deep breath. I wondered if I had been injured somewhere else. The pain was barely manageable and I spent the rest of the day on the couch breathing shallowly and taking aspirin. It was an uncomfortable night and the next day I moved very carefully. " Peggi said,

"I found out a few days later that I had caused my upper left back area to spasm due to over-use of my muscles, I had also pulled the rib heads out of alignment in the chest area and felt relief when my physical therapist, who knew what had happened, adjusted my back. I still had to be careful for the next several days. It is curious that no one in the medical field mentioned that this could be a problem. Surely I am not the first! "

Trying to use my crutches properly, I had pressed the crutch into my rib cage resulting in tenderness, and strained muscles causing muscle spasm. The instructions for using crutches did not mention this side effect. I'm so glad my sister was with me and knew what the problem was. I had to breath shallow, not move around much, and wait it out. I was in bed for 18 hours before I could get up and move around. It was a week before the pain in my rib muscles subsided.

I called the doctor's office a week or so later to inquire about another matter, and asked if they had patients with my rib pain and breathing difficulties. The nurse sounded alarmed, and said I should have come in, it could have been something serious like a heart attack. She had not heard of other patients with this problem. I thought this strange, as my sister and I had both experienced it. Later, I searched online for similar experiences, but did not find anything like our chest-rib pain.

Researching my injury, I learned:

· Instances of leg injuries (from ski accidents) have decreased markedly. "The overall rate of injuries over the last four decades has dropped by 50%, and broken legs have decreased by 95% since the early 1970s. 1

· The femur, or thigh bone, is the largest and strongest bone in the human body. It is surrounded by lots of tissue like the quad muscles and a large "femural" artery that carries a lot of blood. Because of this, it takes a lot of force to fracture a femur and it is also very dangerous. 2

Four weeks after surgery I am using one crutch, going up and down stairs, and driving. I feel improvement every day. There is pain with overuse and movement is restricted. I intend to be on the golf course in a few months!

Because I am unemployed I have been developing two businesses that I promote online. My work is done from home. I have not been able to think effectively during the time I was using pain medication, nor was I able to sit at my computer for long periods of time. I expect to take about six weeks to recover enough to get back into my home-based work full-time.

The hospital and doctors bills are over $ 33,000. The hospital has a financial assistance program, and I have applied.

I wrote this article to share my experience with others who suffer injuries requiring the use of crutches. How To Paint Your Snowboard

If you are a typical snowboarder, you want to be a bit unique and stand out on the slopes. One way to do this is with your choice of snowboard apparel. However, another very popular ways to do this is to custom paint your snowboard.

You can do this yourself, if you have the time and patience. Basically, to do a good job, you have to follow four steps – preparing the board, priming the board, painting it, and sealing it.

However, to start with, you will need a good work area. There are advantages to painting both indoors or outdoors. If you have an indoor work area, make sure that the ventilation system is good enough to exhaust the paint fumes from the area. If your work area is located outdoors, your main concern will be finding a non-windy area where the air currents are small or non-existent so they will not interfere with your paint job.

To ensure that the board is clean, wipe the dirt off the surface to be painted with a clean damp rag. You also want to remove any wax build up. Any good wax remover from your local hardware or grocery store should do the job. Then, you want to scuff the surface of the board with fine sandpaper. This will prepare it to receive the primer coat. And, finally, plug up the binding holes with q-tips to prevent paint or primer from clogging them.

Once the prep work is done, priming is relatively easy. simply spray it on according to the directions on the spray can. Basically, however, you want to avoid over priming the board. So, rather than trying to do everything with one pass, if necessary, do multiple light passes until you have covered the board well. The important thing is to keep the spray can moving so you do not have primer build-up in spots. Then let the primer dry.

When painting the snowboard, first lay down the background colors – again using multiple light layers, if necessary instead of one heavy layer. When you are satisfied with the density and colors of the background, then you can use stencils to apply any designs or logos on the board.

The next to last step is to seal the board by clear coating it. This is usually a multi-phase process as you will want to apply three to four coats on the board.

Finally, to give your board that nice glossy finish, get some rubbing compound from your local auto supply shop and give the surface a nice buffing.

Cleaning Snowboarding Boots

It's hard to find a way of having more fun in the winter, so there's nothing better than spending time on the slopes at the weekends, boarding and skiing. The trouble is when you get home, exhausted but happy, the temptation is to simply put the gear away in the garage and go and get a hot drink. You think to yourself that you'll get up early and sort it out in the morning, but you forget and the next time you see the gear will be the next weekend you pack it in to the car to head off to the slopes. So the ski gear will still be left cold and damp for another few days.

After a few weeks of this kind of treatment, you'll probably notice that your boots are starting to smell a little ripe. This is because all the cold and damp has led to the growth of bacteria in the fabric parts of the boot liners, and they love to give off that very noticeable odour.

What to Do

To get rid of the smell you have to get rid of the bacteria, so you'll need to do the following:

Clean the Boots

  • Take the liners out of the boots, and put them in a warm room or office to dry. This step alone will kill a proportion of the bacteria.
  • Fill a sink or a bucket with warm water and add one cupful of white vinegar and small amount of laundry powder.
  • Soak the liners in the mix for at least 30 minutes. The vinegar will kill off most of the remaining bacteria and the detergent will deal with the sweat and dirt that any future bacteria would like to feed on.
  • While the liners are soaking, use a sponge soaked in the same solution to clean off the rest of the boots.
  • Once the liners have soaked, rinse them thoroughly in clean water. Do not worry if they still smell of vinegar after rinsing, that smell will disappear as they dry.
  • Reshape the liners and leave them on a towel to dry thoroughly in a warm room.

Keep the Bacteria at Bay

The cleaning will have dealt with the majority of the bacteria, and so the liners will smell much more sweetly now. The next step is try to prevent the bacteria taking hold again:

  • Spray the liners with an odour spray such as Febreeze or Odour Eater. Office cleaner suppliers are usually a good source for these kind s of products.
  • Make an insert that you can use between sessions on the slopes. Baking soda and Coffee Grounds are ideal for this. Fill and old pair of socks with a mix of the soda and coffee, and tie them off to make a pouch, and put them into the boots when they're not in use.


The best solution is to dry the boots thoroughly after each use.

  • Get in the habit of bringing the boots in to a warm dry room and removing the liners to allow them to air, rather than putting them away wet.
  • Once they are dry, spray the liners with an odour control spray, and drop in the sock pouches described above.
